Tour experience
All Wellington’s rivers and streams, which offer a wide variety of fishing water, begin in the forest covered mountainous ranges east and west of Wellington city. For those anglers desiring serenity or for the genteel angler, there are the wide, deep, willow-lined slow dreamy rivers which are pleasant, easy rivers to fish. And for the adventurous angler there is the possibility of classic wilderness fishing with trophy trout.
Headwaters start with pristine, bubby mountain streams which provide mountain-style fishing in scenic surroundings. These lead into the best fishing in Wellington which is in forest park wilderness requiring rigorous hiking. Here there are steep cliffs, slow-flowing yet turbulent deep waters with sudden holes, numerous boulders and bubbling runs. Then be prepared to rush downstream when you hook a good fish as it is likely to fight with tenacity. All these challenges need to be overcome to get a chance to land a trophy trout - you will need to have the agility and fitness of a mountain goat!
The streams which wind through attractive, hilly private pastoral land have gorges with stable well-defined pools sheltered under patches of native bush and grassy banks. There are gravelly beaches, moderate numbers of trout, long glides, and shingley runs with wide shallow riffles. All of these attributes, along with access being generally good and the streams being easy to wade and cross, contribute towards providing good all-season fishing.
