Tour experience

Rotorua is the trout capital of New Zealand with 13 lakes and numerous rivers within an hours drive of the city. Most of these attractive lakes offer shoreline fishing and exhibit widely differing characteristics – from water styles and depth through to the vegetation surroundings, fish types and sizes. Some are well sheltered and surrounded by native and exotic forests while others are openly exposed to wind, rain and sunshine. The fishing options are just as diverse all year long, with distinctive local favourites according to the current season and depending on morning or evening.

Access to most of the lakes and rivers is a gentle, direct drive to the water – great for people with limited mobility who need a day’s fishing and don’t want too much fuss to get there.

In the small crystal clear spring creeks with overhanging bush and lush watercress, the fish can be easily stalked. In the deeper, more challenging wilderness bush-lined streams, the water is clear and the trout can be sight fished in the well-defined runs and stable pools. But wading can be difficult as the bottom is uneven so watch for old, slippery sunken logs along the sandy beaches. There is some superb wilderness fishing in these native bush surroundings.

You can walk along well-cut, bush-clad tracks to get to unspoiled, picturesque rivers which hold large populations of rainbow trout. If you want to combine fishing and hiking for the day there are small wilderness-type rivers which run through heavily bush-clad, rugged country. This region has different styles of water in each section of these rivers including excellent, clear waters running over rock and stone with large sections of wilderness fishing available.

Most of the relatively small rivers hold good sized resident fish in deep holes and the trout can be spotted on bright days. So if you want the opportunity to fish in pristine surroundings – lakes, rivers or streams, and have a good shot at catching some rewarding fish, then this is a great region to, ‘Have a go’!
