Tour experience

Driving to your fishing destination you will pass snow capped mountains, golden sand beaches, virgin native forest, rugged coastlines, high country plateaus, and miles of award-winning vineyards (particularly sauvignon blanc). There are 2 mountain lakes in this region and a hydro lake. As well, there are beautiful rivers with wild rugged headwaters and small streams which flow gently across hilly farms and lowland orchards.

Magnificent rivers have gouged their way through steep native bush-covered mountains. They have huge volumes of gravel in their tumbling waters which have created stony, alluvial flats that are home to wild brown trout. Here there are impressive gorges with accessible reaches between them offering superb wilderness fishing. The well kept tracks, bridges and huts built by the Department of Conservation enhance this angling experience.

The bush shaded rivers in the mountain ranges are swift rough, well-oxygenated stretches with trout often lying in deep, sheltered waters behind large boulders. There is more than 100km of fishable river water as well as rock and stone mountain-streams to choose from. These include small, gentle streams with deep clear holes so wading and crossing is easy.

Farmland rivers and streams are generally more sedate with a variety of riverbeds from weedy and rocky through to shingle beds. The waters also vary from wide shallow sections with clear deep holding pools to deep narrow runs - yet in all these waters there are patches in which the fish can be spotted and stalked from the grassy banks.

Important hint: remember your insect repellent as the sand-flies are hungry!
