Tour experience
From the city to your fishing location you will see glittering rivers and streams wind among the award-winning vineyards and horticultural fields. You will next drive through rolling hill country with sheep farms before moving into back-country wilderness where trophy trout are in residence or out to the lakes with their pleasant native flora surroundings.
In the Hawkes Bay there are two main types of river. The first are those that are generally wide, shallow, unstable, shingly and have crystal-clear rock pools which are suitable for the angler less interested in hiking. These river with apparently endless kilometers of fishable water between runs, have plenty of beautiful cold clear spring- waters entering them. Be watchful when wading as the stones can be slippery. The overhanging willow-lined sections of the rivers, which provide food for the fish and shelter from the sun, are also a challenge when casting! Many of these rivers run through open valleys and sheep country so you will hear the sounds of cicadas, and grasshoppers in summer along many parts of the rivers as well as the occasional bleating of lambs and sheep.
The second general river type is in the south of this region. Here the rivers have a rocky, stable bed with a pumice stone base and large boulders are common. They flow through deep gorges cut through the soft white limestone rock and have many deep holes and fast runs so cross at carefully selected areas. These rivers are bordered by dense manuka and beech trees. They are fed by small, clear-watered stoney streams with grassy banks meandering across open farmlands as well as by streams flowing from the scrub, and exotic bush.
Trout in the many wilderness rivers (excluding tiger) are not sophisticated and the clear water allows great visibility so fish are easy to spot and stalk. The fishing in this region is pleasant but patchy with Fish and Game Dive Research Surveys (2007) recording up to 200 fish per kilometer in some sections which is the densest trout population in New Zealand.
