Tour experience
The are 3 main river systems in Gisborne which wander and climb through some of the most inaccessible country in New Zealand. The area is geographically diverse and exciting with a wide variety of fishing to be experienced all year round. You will travel through relatively isolated native bush and hilly sheep country on roads which are narrow, winding and sometimes unsealed. Then you will need to hike though bush to get to most rivers unless you use a helicopter. The general rule is the more inaccessible the area, the larger the fish.
These challenging rivers provide superb nymph fishing and hold astonishing quantities of trout in excellent condition but you will need to take care when wading – slippery rocks and boulders are nestled amongst and alongside good runs and pools! Often the clear rivers have shifting shingle beds but stable pools and runs. The fish are frequently difficult to spot as there are some very deep runs and pools.
Some streams are too warm in summer to support trout – the ones which do offer good fishing, tend to be in more difficult areas to access and are not for the faint-hearted… but worth it if you are a dry fly angler looking for clear, well developed pools and runs! These streams have deep, stable holes but the population tends to vary from year to year.
The lakes have limited shoreline with patches of native bush and some grassy elevated banks which can make it difficult to approach fish without spooking them. These lakes contain mainly rainbow which are not easy to spot unless the water is low. Remember your sunglasses as the glare on the water is intense!
Gisborne waters are ideal for the relatively fit, agile anglers with bush-craft skills and who are enthusiastic hikers as well as into wet and wild adventures - keen anglers have swum down rivers, after fish in order to land them! There is a large area of fishable water with almost unlimited possibilities if you like rugged hiking.
