Tour experience
North
The magnitude and variety of fishable water in this wide range of terrain is dream inspiring.
There are 2 main topographical features - high country foothills and the eastern slopes of the Southern Alps. The high country streams and the snow-fed headwaters of rivers have rock and stone beds. Here the clear rivers flow deceptively swiftly, with fast white water at the head of pools and runs which then flow through a succession of short, attractive gorges, limestone cliffs and beech forests. The rivers and streams hold salmon and good trout particularly in the deep well-defined holes and runs in the gorges.
In the eastern slopes and lowland Canterbury plains is the 2nd type of fishing water. Here stretching across the broad plains and tussock country leading to the Pacific coast the attractive pools in the gorges become wide, braided shingle rivers with prolific runs of salmon and trout.
The lakes in this region lie in the basins with easy shoreline access. They have tussock-covered shores and the shallow inlets have a few patches of willows. On the lowlands and river flats there are forests bordering lakes as well. Many of these lakes have land-locked salmon.
South
The snow-fed rivers are prone to flooding which result in significant course changes. This also creates a wide range of different fishing waters as the rivers change character dramatically in relatively short distances as it tumbles down the steep gradients of the Alps. In the headwaters the tributaries are swift flowing and crystal clear. The water races through majestic beech forests, beside ferns and mosses, over cascading waterfalls. The middle sections are deep with stable rapids and pools interspersed with sections of gorge and the occasional swing bridge. There are sea-run browns and prolific numbers of salmon.
After passing through the forest and gorges the rivers enter hill country and tussock grasses where you will see rabbits and probably hear the wild deer during the roaring season.
The rivers separate into several shingle braids with the extra snow-fed water contributing to the ever-changing nature of these waters crossing the Canterbury plains to the sea.
For all these variances, there are plenty of safe places to cross and wade, and the fish are generally easy to stalk and sight (… no one mentioned landing)!
Hint: weather conditions are unpredictable and change rapidly so put in your jacket regardless of how sunny it appears.
