Tour experience
Although there are no big rivers in Northland, there are about 15 streams which hold small populations of trout. The streams which are able to sustain the trout through the long hot summers, are streams fed by bush-clad catchments. These pass through native bush canopied-banks keeping the water cool enough to sustain trout life, which lie deep in the pools when the water warms. These streams are easy to wade and relaxing to fish with their clear, flowing waters.
Kerkeri dam is well stocked with rainbow trout and is an excellent area for the inexperienced angler to learn or the less agile angler to practice skills.
On private land, on the west coast, there are some peaceful lakes, set in the sand dunes with pine forests down to the water’s edge. These lakes are quite deep with sudden drop offs. The area is tranquil and worth visiting if you need to relax in peace with the possibility of catching a trout – remember it’s a possibility only, as the fish in this region are limited.
